China's New Commissioner of Foreign Ministry Meets HK Chief Executive

Ji Peiding, who has just assumed commissioner of China's Foreign Affairs Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), met Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong SAR, Monday afternoon.

Ji conveyed Tung greetings from China's Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan and said he is pleased to meet Tung.

Ji said Tung Chee Hwa has led the SAR government in carrying out the "one country, two systems" principle and the Basic Law to the letter and has scored noted achievement since Hong Kong's return to the motherland.

In the past four years, the central government has been also resolutely implementing the "one country, two systems" principle and the Basic Law and has offered full support to the SAR administration led by Tung, he said, noting that the central government and the Chinese mainland are the strong backing of the Hong Kong SAR.

Facts demonstrate that the Hong Kong compatriots have the wisdom and capability to administer Hong Kong well and the successful implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle not only complies with the reality and long-term interests of Hong Kong and the mainland, but also brings far- reaching significance to the realization of China's reunification, he said.

Ji said that China's central government and Foreign Affairs Ministry have both attached importance to the work of diplomatic issues related to Hong Kong undertaken by the Commissioner Office.

Ma Yuzhen, former commissioner of the Foreign Affairs Ministry in the Hong Kong SAR, and other staff in the Commissioner Office have established sound cooperation links with the SAR government and effective work mechanism on the basis of "mutual respect, mutual trust, mutual support and close cooperation," he added.

Ji pledged that he will continue to make efforts in this regard, increasing exchanges with the SAR government, and prudently handling diplomatic issues related to the Hong Kong SAR.

Tung said the Hong Kong SAR is devoted to maintaining the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong under the "one country, two systems" and he believes Hong Kong will become better with the joint efforts of all the Hong Kong people.

The SAR government will also increase cooperation with the Commissioner's Office and expand exchanges with the outside world, he added.
