China's Largest Constant Temperature Warehouse Group

China's largest group of constant temperature warehouses for farm produce is being built in Laiwu, a city in east China's Shandong Province known for producing ginger, garlic and onion.

Local officials said 50 warehouses are expected to be put into use before the harvest season for garlic bolts, adding the total number to 104, with a capacity of 145,000 tons.

The new warehouses will raise the city's capacity in preserving and processing its farm produce, according to the sources.

Vegetable growing has brought remarkable economic returns to local farmers.

In 2000 alone, the preservation of 30,000 tons garlic heads earned 100 million yuan (12 million U.S. dollars) for local farmers, the sources said.
