China Moves to Ensure Farm Produce SafetyChina will set up a market access system for farm produce this year to curb pollution of farm products due to residues from pesticides and chemical additives.Liu Zhenwei, head of the Department of Market and Economic Information at the Ministry of Agriculture said at a recent conference in Nanjing that Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Shenzhen have been selected as candidate cities for a pilot program. The abuse of pesticides and food additives has caused wide concern about food safety among the public in China over recent years. The authorities hope that the market access system will prevent unsafe food from entering the market by enforcing safety control measures during both production and marketing processes. Meanwhile, Liu said the first and second lists of 715 agricultural standards composed by the ministry will take effect this year, while the drafting of the third list of standards will also be kicked off. The Ministry of Agriculture also aims to set up 20 to 30 quality supervision centers this year to build a nationwide quality inspection and supervision network, Liu said. The ministry will speed up the building of centers for the inspection and accreditation of animal products, veterinary drugs and feed products, he added.
