Criminal Gang Cracked in East China

Police in Rui'an city in east China's Zhejiang Province have recently cracked a criminal gang, putting the 39 backbone members behind bars.

The leader of the gang, Ye Chongkai, 29, was the last to be arrested. He was caught by police on April 13 in a hotel in the Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province, in southwest China.

Police sources said the gang has over 40 members and operated under the cover of a civil engineering contractor, transport agent and sand pit. Most of its members are teenagers with criminal records.

The gang are suspected of 32 cases of murder, rape, blackmail, illegal possession of weapons, forced transactions and other crimes. At least one person was killed and 11 others injured or disabled in these cases.

Through intimidation and force, the gang have actually monopolized the local construction market, the police said.

The crackdown of the gang was part of a national campaign against black society gangs launched by national authorities earlier this year.
