Chinese President Hails Entrepreneurs' Role

Top Chinese leaders Jiang Zemin and Li Peng wrote to the annual gathering of China's leading entrepreneurs to highlight their role in the country's modernization drive.

In his letter, President Jiang hoped local enterprises and entrepreneurs improve their quality constantly, seize the opportunities, be bold in innovation, and work hard to make new achievements.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, wrote that it is greatly necessary to foster a contingent of socialist entrepreneurs.

Present at the gathering were Huang Ju, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and secretary of the Shanghai CPC municipal committee, and Chen Jinhua and Mao Zhiyong, both vice chairmen of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Shanghai Mayor Xu Kuangdi addressed the meeting.

Over 600 company leaders attended the meeting, which is dubbed as "2001 National Entrepreneurs' Action Day". The meeting this year focuses on how best local entrepreneurs would face the globalization.

The "National Entrepreneurs' Day" was introduced in March 1994.
