Minister Urges Crackdown on Criminal Gangs in Transportation SectorA senior Chinese official Friday called for intensified crackdown on criminal gangs in the transportation sector, which often resorted to illicit means to monopolize the market.The problem has endangered the legitimate rights of numerous law-abiding citizens, and affected the normal operation of both economic and social activities, said Huang Zhendong, minister of communication. "It's of great importance and urgency to reorganize and standardize the transportation and the construction market," he emphasized. Huang made the remarks at a nationwide working conference of the ministry, adding that "traffic administrative organs across China should manage to achieve initial achievement before yearend, attaining marked improvement within next year, and realize standardized management by the year 2005. The minister urged departments concerned to ban those who run their business without legitimate licenses, facilitate competition in the sectors, and improve the transparency of administrative approval procedures. He said that attention should be focused on such activities as obscure manipulation in public bidding, power-for-money trade, local protectionism, as well as projects with grave hidden dangers. |
