Iranian VP Stresses Economic Cooperation With Tunisia

Iranian First Vice President Hassan Habibi, in a meeting with visiting Tunisian Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi Saturday, stressed the need to promote bilateral economic cooperation, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

Ghannouchi, who arrived here Friday evening on a four-day state visit, is the first high-ranking Tunisian official to visit Iran since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution.

After his meeting with Ghannouchi, Habibi said Tehran-Tunis ties stand at a good level, adding that "we should initiate new activities and hold talks on economic, regional and international issues."

For his party, Ghannouchi said that his visit centers on economic issues and the development of the Mideast situation.

"We try to define a lawful framework for cooperation between the two countries' businessmen and clear the way for joint ventures," he said.

Tunisia and Iran would sign a bilateral trade agreement, the Tunisian prime minister disclosed, without giving further details.

Tunisia and Iran, which severed their diplomatic relations after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, have begun to resume ties since reformist Iranian President Mohammad Khatami came to power in 1997 and then pursued a detente foreign policy.
