Newspaper Denounces Lee Teng-hui's Attempted Japan tour
The planned visit to Japan by Lee Teng-hui for "medical reasons" is a political plot by Lee and those seeking "Taiwan independence", the People's Daily says in a commentary Saturday.
By granting a visa to Lee, the Japanese government has caused further damage to Sino-Japanese relations, the paper says.
Lee is by no means "an ordinary citizen" but the chief representative of the force attempting at "Taiwan independence".
It is obvious that Lee's visit for medical reasons is purely an excuse, and his true purpose is to seek support to the "Taiwan independence" attempt and upgrade the relations between Taiwan and Japan. Whatever his excuse, his visit is aimed at splitting China and undermining Sino-Japanese relations, the paper says.
The paper notes that Lee has long been working hand in hand with the rightist forces in Japan in their attempt to split China. Lee's planned visit has got support from the Japanese rightists.
Lee has long been seeking to visit Japan but was repeatedly turned down by the Japanese side. This time he made use of the chaos in Japan's politics and applied for a visa earlier this month.
The Japanese government's decision to grant the visa is a betrayal of its commitment, which harms the relations between China and Japan, the paper says.
The Chinese side urges Japan to observe the principles laid down in the three important diplomatic documents signed by the two nations to promote healthy development of bilateral relations, the paper concludes.
