Two Chinese Airlines Start Code-Sharing

Two Chinese airlines giants started a code-sharing project involving all flights traveling the route of Shenyang-Guangzhou-Shenyang, sources announced Wednesday in this north Chinese city.

China Northern Airlines and Southern Airlines) also agreed to clinch the ticket price through joint efforts and allow preferential treatment to each other's customers.

China Southern Airlines has launched a similar cooperation with Air Yunnan on the route of Guangzhou-Kunming on March 1, 2001.

China Southern Airlines and China Northern Airlines are major domestic air carriers. Sources said that the two giants are considering a merger possibility, which is subject to the approval of the State Council.

Code-sharing is a business mode started in the early 1970s, referring to practices that allow the affiliated carriers of a particular airlines to provide flight services, carrying the airlines' flight code.

Now, domestic airlines have commonly established code-sharing ties with each other. America's Northwest Airlines has also adopted the practice in its flights to eight Chinese cities from December 19, 2000.
