Guangzhou's Population Close to Ten Million

The population of Guangzhou, this capital city of South China's Guangdong Province has reached 9.94 million, the largest among cities in the province, according to the latest census.

The figure indicates that Guangzhou has become one of the exceedingly large cities in China, next only to Chongqing, Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin.

In the past decades, Guangzhou's excessively rapid growth of population has been effectively controlled, its population structure optimized and residents' educational standards improved considerably.

The census shows that Guangzhou has 2.37 million families, averaging 3.21 persons per family, down by 0.62 from 1990.

It also shows that of every 100,000 people 9,309 have a college education, up 70.40 percent from ten years ago, while 23,968 people are primary school graduates, down by 24.16 percent.

A great change has taken place in the population structure, with the number of senior citizens rising to 598,300 from 397,200 ten year ago.

Guangzhou's urban population stands at 8.22 million, accounting for 83.79 percent of the total, a rise of 14.39 percentage points compared to last census conducted ten years ago.
