Beijing Hi-tech Exports Double in First Quarter

Beijing's exports of hi-tech products doubled in the first quarter of this year to reach 568 million US dollars compared with the same period last year.

Statistics show that hi-tech exports accounted for half of the Municipality's export total for the first time.

Hi-tech imports in the same period totaled 1.2 billion US dollars, up 37.1 percent, accounting for 60.9 percent of the city's import total.

Sources said that large foreign enterprises, such as Nokia, Ericsson, and JVC, were major contributors to the speedy growth of hi-tech exports.

Hi-tech exports to Japan, Hong Kong and the United States accounted for 46.7 percent of Beijing's export total.

Hi-tech imports by state-owned enterprises increased by 56.6 percent to reach 611 million U.S. dollars during the period.
