During the just-concluded Sino-US talks, China presented a large amount of evidence proving that it was the US plane that rammed into the Chinese fighter jet and caused the crash of the Chinese jet and the loss of the Chinese pilot, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhang Qiyue at a regular news briefing in Beijing April 19.
US Pilots "Dangerous and Aggressive"
Zhang showed reporters video footage that documented "dangerous and aggressive" flying by US pilots last year.
The pictures showed US fighter jets flying within sight of Chinese planes. At times the planes came within a few wingspans of each other. At one stage, an American pilot was seen taking a picture from the plane's cockpit. Zhang said the tape was shot last year off the Chinese coast.
Computer Generated Simulation
She also showed a computer simulation of the US EP-3E spy plane turning into the path of the Chinese fighter jet, ending with double impacts between the two.
Analysis: US Caused the Collision
An analysis of paint scrapes and antennae breakage suffered by the US plane prove that it caused the collision, Zhang said, adding that the Chinese evidence is "just the tip of the iceberg".
The US side alleged that Chinese jet fighter had flown at a 45-degree angle and rammed from behind into the US plane on its left rear side. But facts proved to the contrary, it was the US plane that had suddenly veered at a wide angle close to and rammed into the Chinese fighter. Videotapes projected show the way the US plane rammed into the Chinese fighter.
The US plane, with left-airfoil antennae snapped, root-segment forepart raised, paint scrapes shown at the rear part of the airfoil tells that these had all been caused by the antennae snapped in a backward direction. If it were as alleged by the US pilot that the Chinese fighter had rammed from behind the US plane its antennae should be snapped in a forward rather than a backward manner. Facts prove that it was the US plane that rammed into the Chinese fighter from its rear.
The US plane with four of outer-motor paddles on its left airfoil shows various headwind scrapes and even the same paint as that from the perpendicular airfoil of the Chinese fighter. Contrarily, no like scrapes can be seen on the backsides of the four said motor paddles of the US plane. If it were as alleged by the US pilot that it were Chinese fighter that had bumped from behind into the US plane, the scrapes and paint should be shown at the backsides of the paddles and these could by no means be seen on the headwind sides.
The US plane shows three broken antennae and sensors below on the left side of its headpiece and scrapes in a rear-forward direction and red paint from the Chinese fighter. This shows that it was the US plane that veered close to and rammed into Chinese fighter at a level of the latter's tailpiece.
"From this evidence, we can see clearly that the collision was caused by the US side," said the spokesperson.
US explanations that the Chinese pilot caused the crash are "totally baseless and riddled with holes," she said.
