Hu Jintao Meets Foreign Party Leaders in Hanoi

Chinese Vice-President and Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Hu Jintao Thursday met in Hanoi with three party leaders from Cuba, the People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and Russia.

The three leaders are member Jorge Luis Sierra of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, alternate members of the Political Bureau Choe Tae Bok of the Workers' Party of Korea Central Committee, and First Vice-Chairman Valentin Alexandrovich Kuptsov of the Russian Communist Party.

Hu and the leaders are in Hanoi to attend the 9th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), which opened Thursday morning.

When meeting with Jorge Luis Sierra, Hu said the China-Cuba relations have enjoyed a comprehensive development under the care and joint efforts of top leaders of the two nations.

General Secretary Jiang Zemin's visit to Cuba again marked a new good beginning of the friendly contacts between the two parties and the two nations at the start of the new century, he said.

Citing the Cuban party and people's adherence to the socialist road and the party leadership, firm stance on safeguarding national independence and state sovereignty, active exploration of the socialist road with the Cuban characteristics, Hu said Cuba has passed its most difficult time and China is very glad of every achievement Cuba has made.

He said he is convinced that under the leadership of the Cuban President Fidel Castro and the Cuban party, the Cuban people are sure to score even greater achievements.

While meeting with Choe Tae Bok, Hu said the traditional China- DPRK friendship has stood the test of time and been deep-rooted in the hearts of the two peoples.

The two parties, under the leadership of Jiang Zemin and General Secretary Kim Jong Il, has made sincere efforts to promote the relations between the two parties and the two countries, Hu said.

In the past year, Kim Jong Il visited China twice and both sides have decided that Jiang will visit the DPRK within the year, Hu said, adding these are all major issues of historic importance, which serve to exert important and far-reaching impact on consolidating and promoting bilateral traditional friendly ties.

China is willing to collaborate with the DPRK party and government to make unremitting efforts for the bilateral friendship, Hu said.

In another development, Hu also met with First Vice-Chairman Valentin Alexandrovich Kuptsov of the Russian Communist Party.
