South China Province Launches Narcotics Control Campaign

South China's Hainan Island Province has been executing a narcotics control campaign across the province with the focus on cracking down on offenders involved in the manufacturing, trafficking and trading of narcotics.

A local official explained that the campaign, which began on March 22 and will end on June 30, is part of the province's efforts to build the island into a region free of narcotics.

Drug use has expanded and spread fast on this southern Chinese island in the past years. The number of drug addicts now total 18, 000 in the island province, said a survey.

Up to April 5, narcotic control officers handled more than 108 cases involving trafficking, manufacturing, trading and consumption of narcotics, and detained 46 people who were suspected of trading in narcotics.

In that campaign, the narcotics control officers also detained another 290 people who consumed drugs and confiscated 25,487.6 grams of narcotics, said the official.
