Coca-Cola's New Drink in Hong Kong Poses No Health Risk

A new diet drink sold by Coca-Cola, a US beverage giant, doesn't pose a health risk even though it uses a sweetener reportedly banned in the United States for more than three decades, according to HK officials.

It is alleged the artificial sweetener, sodium cyclamate, had been outlawed in the United States for more than 30 years after being

linked to cancer in animals.

A spokeswoman for Swire Coca-Cola Hong Kong said that the sweetener was approved for use in foods in Hong Kong and other countries.

A spokeswoman for Foods and Environmental Hygiene expressed the same opinion.
