China's Top Legislator Meets Japanese Visitors

China's Top Legislator Meets Japanese Visitors
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, said that he hopes Japan would adopt a correct attitude towards history and abide by the one-China principle.

Li made the remark here Thursday in a meeting with a delegation from the Japan-Asia Exchange Association, led by its President Sato Fumio.

Li said that the association, since its founding 22 years ago, has done a lot to promote Sino-Japanese friendship, especially in strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries. He added that he hopes the association will continue to do so.

Li said that China attaches great importance to developing friendly cooperation with Japan.

He expressed hope that the Japanese side would adopt a correct attitude towards historical issues and abide by the one-China principle, in accordance with the principles and spirit of the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement, the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship, and the Sino-Japanese Joint Declaration.

This is the political foundation for the development of Sino- Japanese friendship, he said.

Li said that he hopes friends from the Japanese business circles would keep a close eye on the sound development of political relations between the two countries while promoting bilateral economic exchanges.

Relations between China and Japan are now at an important moment of development, Li said. He stressed that China is a country that honors its commitments and sticks to its principles.

The guests are here at the invitation of the China Association for International Friendly Contact.
