Hu Jintao Attends Opening Ceremony of Vietnam's Party Congress

Hu Jintao, Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China ( CPC) Central Committee and Chinese Vice-President, Thursday attended the opening ceremony of the 9th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV).

Hu is heading a CPC delegation for the congress.

The congress opened at 9:00 local time, and its participants included major leaders of the Vietnamese party, government and national assembly, 1168 deputies of the CPV and 34 delegations from foreign political parties.

Prior to the opening ceremony, General-Secretary Le Kha Phieu of the CPV Central Committee and other Vietnamese leaders met with Hu and other heads of the foreign delegations.

The current congress is an important event in the CPV's history, which will review the past 15 years' experiences of renovation process, work out the development strategy at the beginning of the new century, and elect new members for the central committee and party leaders.
