China's Tao Luna Sets Women's Pistol Shooting World Record

Chinese sharpshooter Tao Luna scored a total of 690.8 points to take the women's 25m pistol World Cup title in Atlanta on Tuesday, setting the world record as the final was first introduced with rapid shots after the Sydney Olympic Games.

Tao, who garnered the air rifle gold and the pistol silver in the millennium Olympics with 488.2 and 491.1 points respectively, accumulated the world record score from 587 points from the qualifying round and 103.8 points in the final.

Her compatriot Chen Ying earned China another silver with 683.4 points after Zhang Jing finished second in the women's air rifle yesterday.

"All the shooters were greatly affected by the unexpected chilly weather in Atlanta today," said Xu Haifeng, chief coach of the Chinese national shooting team. "And the world record is expected to be improved quite soon as Tao only got 290 points from the qualifying slow shots."

The bronze medal went to the hosts at the Tom Lowe Shooting Grounds, Georgia, and the men's 50m pistol title was won by a Uzbekistan entry.
