Afforestation Project to Be Launched in North ChinaChina Association for Non- Governmental Cooperation (CANGO) will launch an afforestation project Friday in Fengning County of north China's Hebei Province with Japanese funds, an official from CANGO said Wednesday.Funded by the Japan-based Tokuyama Corporation and Keidanren fund, the afforestation project will cover 67 hectares of land in the county with trees, in an effort to block the way for sandstorms from Inner Mongolia, that attack Beijing and Tianjin, said the official. As part of CANGO's activities to mark the Earth Day, the project also aims to raise awareness about environmental issues among local citizens, the official said. Founded in 1992, CANGO is dedicated to promoting non- governmental cooperation in alleviating poverty, protecting the environment and social development in China's poor, remote and minority-inhabited areas. By the end of 2000, CANGO had implemented over 250 projects in 74 poverty-stricken counties of 20 Chinese provinces, cities and autonomous regions.
