Quality Environment is Top Government Priority, Tung

To help maintain and enhance Hong Kong's position as an international city and business and financial center, the Hong Kong SAR Government has attached great importance to the creation of a first-class living environment as it affected both the local residents' quality of life and the ability to attract the requisite overseas talents, Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa said here Wednesday.

Speaking after touring some historic sites and inspecting recent developments in the Central and Western District, Tung said: "If we are to achieve our objective of providing an excellent living environment, we must first ensure that we improve town planning; carry through an effective green program in the urban area; maintain a clean environment; strengthen our environmental protection measures; and expedite our urban renewal."

Tung visited a development scheme area at First Street and Second Street in Sai Ying Pun. Covering about 0.35 hectare, the area is characterized by a predominance of residential buildings over 30 years old with narrow streets in the front and service lanes in the rear.

It is one of the 25 priority projects to be undertaken to avoid piecemeal redevelopment, optimize the development potential and improve the environmental conditions.
