Sino-Thai Relations to Gain Momentum

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, said Wednesday he is confident that Sino-Thai relations will continue to gain momentum in the new century.

At a meeting with visiting Thai Privy Councilor Siddhi Savetsila, Li said that the relations between China and Thailand are exemplary, featured by the mutual trust between countries with different social systems.

He described Siddhi as "an old friend of the Chinese people" and spoke highly of Siddhi's contribution to boosting ties with China when he served as Thai deputy prime minister and foreign minister.

Li stressed that it is the established policy of the Chinese government to develop all-round friendly cooperative relations based on mutual trust with Thailand, noting that bilateral cooperation in all sectors has been going on well since diplomatic relations were forged in 1975.

Such ties are highlighted and accelerated by the frequent exchanges of visits between senior officials of the two countries, Li said, recalling Thai Queen Sirikit's first visit to China last year.

"The royal family of Thailand has played a unique role in boosting bilateral cooperation and enhancing friendship between the two countries," he said.

Siddhi said the friendship between Thailand and China dates back to ancient times, adding that the people of Thailand cherish and will continue to enhance the friendly and cooperative relations with China.

He said the three generations of his family are accompanying him on the ongoing China tour in an effort "to hand down such friendship from generation to generation."

Siddhi spoke highly of China's achievements in its modernization drive and the improvement of the Chinese people's living standards. "It is witnessed by all that China has contributed tremendously to safeguarding human rights, maintaining peace and boosting development of the world," he said.
