Jiang Calls Spanish Leaders During Stopover on Gran Canaria Island

Chinese President Jiang Zemin called Spain's King Juan Carlos I and Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar Wednesday during a stopover on the Gran Canaria Island on his way home after concluding his six-nation Latin America visit.

The Spanish king extended a warm welcome to Jiang, congratulated him over the successful visit to the six Latin American countries and hoped that the friendly cooperative relations between Spain and China will enjoy further development.

Jiang, for his part, thanked King Juan Carlos I and Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar for the hospitalities Spain has given to him during his stopover on the Gran Canaria Island, a Spanish territory off the West African coast.

He said that recent years have seen smooth development of the Sino-Spanish relations as the two countries have strengthened cooperation in politics, economy, science and technology, and culture.

The Chinese president said that he hopes the two countries will continue to work together so as to bring the bilateral relations to a new height in the new century.
