Two Blasts Occur in Karachi, Pakistan

Two bomb blasts took place on Wednesday near popular shopping centers in Karachi, killing one person and injuring another, according to reports reaching from the Pakistani southern port city.

"One person suspected to be a bomber was torn to pieces as the bomb went off in his hand and another was injured," a bomb squad officer was quoted as saying after surveying the market in southern Karachi where the worst explosion took place.

A second bomb exploded two kilometers away, but there were no injuries, police said.

No one has claimed responsibility for either explosions.

Security has been tightened in Karachi in the wake of strikes staged by the ethnic Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Jeay Sindh Qaumi Movement (JSQM) to protest water shortage in Sindh province. A total of 34 vehicles were set on fire while about 150 MQM and JSQM activists were taken into custody on Tuesday.

Pakistan is facing a serious drought which is expected to cost the country 1.2 billion U.S. dollars in lost agricultural revenue.
