Shanghai's Retail Sales Up 9.8 Percent in First Quarter

China's largest industrial city of Shanghai has recorded a 9.8 percent growth in its retail sales of consumer goods in the first quarter of the year, the city's Bureau of Statistics said.

Shanghai's retail sales topped 46.6 billion yuan in the first three months, partly thanks to the shopping rush during the New Year and Spring Festival holidays.

Sales by major department stores and supermarkets saw a higher growth. The city's top 100 commercial enterprises reported sales totaling 10.79 billion yuan, up 25.3 percent over the same period last year.

E-commerce gained further development in the said period, with more enterprises opening commercial websites and providing home delivery services.

E-commerce in Lianhua sold 2.91 million yuan worth of goods through the Internet in the first quarter. Telephone orders received by the Hualian Supermarket totaled 720,000 yuan
