Chinese Vice-Premier, French Minister Discuss Cultural Cooperation
Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing met Tuesday with French Minister of Culture and Communication Catherine Tasca and they discussed bilateral cooperation in the cultural sector.

Li, who is here on an official visit, said both China and France have magnificent cultural heritages and that bilateral cultural exchanges date back to ancient times. Such exchanges have now become an important part of the good relations between the two countries, contributing greatly to mutual understanding and friendship, he noted.

The vice-premier said China and France are endowed with abundant cultural resources and that there are great potentials in bilateral cultural cooperation. He expressed the hope that such cooperation would witness further development in the new century.

Moreover, Li said that cultural exchanges and cooperation are as important as political cooperation in international affairs and cultural diversity are even more important today when the world is faced with globalization. Maintaining such diversity could only make people's life more harmonious and colorful, he added.

Tasca, for her part, expressed agreement with Li's view on cultural diversity. She said that efforts should be made to maintain and protect each country's unique cultural characteristics.

Also on Tuesday, Li met with United Nations Educational, Science and Cultural Organization Director-General Koichiro Matsuura and they exchanges views on educational and cultural cooperation between China and the United Nations.
