Russia Plans to Join WTO in 2002: Minister

Russia will speed up the process of joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) and plans to become its member in 2002, Russian Anti-Monopoly Minister Ilya Yuzhanov said here Tuesday.

Yuzhanov made the remarks at a news conference here after a meeting with the Governmental Business Council headed by Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, which focused on the negotiating process of Russia's entry to the WTO and the position of Russian business people on this issue.

"Certain industries and various entrepreneurs voiced their concerns over the country's intention to join this organization," the minister said.

The negotiations on the accession to the WTO depend largely on the position of its members, which are placing additional terms before Russia, Yuzhanov said.

Russia's business people acknowledge the need to join the WTO to avoid anti-dumping measures against Russia, from which exporters and the country incur losses. This will help to accelerate the negotiation process for Russia's entry to the WTO, he said.
