Hamas Armed Group Claims Responsibility for Mortar ShellingA militant group of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas Tuesday claimed responsibility for the mortar attack on a southern Israeli town Monday night, saying it was retaliating the Israeli assassination of a Hamas activist."The Ezzedin Al-Qassam Brigades claim responsibility for the shelling of the Zionist town of Sederot, north of Gaza city," the group said a statement. The statement said that shelling was a direct response to " Israeli raids against our people", referring to the death of Hamas bodyguard Mohammed Yassin, who was killed in a explosion at his home in Gaza city on Saturday. Israel responded to the mortar attack on Sederot with missle attacks and air raids on the Palestinian-controlled areas Monday night, which left at least one Palestinian dead and 27 injured. The Israeli attacks have been the fiercest since the outbreak of the ongoing Palestinian Al Aqsa Intifada (Uprising). More than 470 people, most of them Palestinians, have been killed in the Israeli- Palestinian clashes. |
