Construction of Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone Going Well

The construction of the Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone, the largest heavy industry project in the city after the Baoshan Iron and Steel Complex, is going smoothly, official sources said.

The construction of two major streets, running east-to-west and north-to-south along the length of the zone, and three canals with both transport and drainage functions have been recently completed one month ahead of schedule.

Still under construction are four other roads and a bridge, which are expected to be completed in July ahead of schedule.

Preparations are also underway for the construction of more utility facilities, including a 25,000 ton wharf, a sewage treatment plant, a power and heating plant, a fire unit and a warehouse area, the sources said.

The planned Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone occupies an area of 29.4 square kilometers on the coast of the Hangzhou Gulf.

The Chinese authorities plan to build it into a world class petroleum and natural gas processing hub.

According to the official plan, the construction of the Chemical Industry Zone will involve two phases, the first of which will last from 2000 to 2010 and cost 150 billion yuan.

The period from 2000 to 2005 will be the first stage of the first phase, which will require investment of up to 60 billion yuan for the construction of large ethylene, isocyanate and polycarbonate plants.
