Liberia Freezes Sankoh's Bank AccountThe Liberian government Monday said they have frozen the bank account of jailed Sierra Leonean rebel leader Foday Sankoh in the country, according to reports reaching here.A Liberian government official was quoted as saying that Sankoh 's account, which had only 500 U.S. dollars, was frozen to show the government's willingness to comply with the demands by the United Nations Security Council. The Security Council last month indicated that stricter measures, such as travel restrictions on Liberian officials and embargo on its diamond exports, would be imposed if the west African country does not cut off all its support for rebels in neighboring Sierra Leone. The United Nations accused Liberia of illegal diamond and weapons trafficking with Sierra Leonean rebels led by Sankoh during the country's nine-year-old civil war. Sankoh was arrested by Sierra Leonean army last May and he is now awaiting trial by a special international court for his role in massive human rights violations and anti-human war crime |
