Chinese Ambassador Urges Japan to Properly Handle Lee Teng-hui's Visit

Chinese Ambassador Urges Japan to Properly Handle Lee Teng-hui's Visit
Chen Jian, Chinese ambassador to Japan, on Tuesday urged Japanese government to properly handle the planned visit by Lee Teng-hui and safeguard the smooth development of Sino-Japanese relationship.

"Chinese government firmly opposes Lee's planned visit to Japan in a bid to safeguard its sovereign integration and in view of the overall Sino-Japanese relationship," Chen said.

The planned visit by Lee for medical reasons is purely an excuse, Chen said, adding that Lee's true purpose is to break the framework of the relations between Japan and Taiwan, and seek support to "Taiwan independence" in a bid to disrupt the Sino-Japanese relationship.

Lee has long been seeking to visit Japan, and his planned visit is purely a political one from the very beginning, he said.

Lee is the chief backstage supporter of the "Taiwan independence" forces, and he is still engaged in activities aimed at separating China on various occasions, the ambassador noted.

Therefore, Lee's planned visit can by no means be interpreted as a trip of "an ordinary citizen" and a matter of humanitarianism, he stressed.

The Taiwan issue is related to the political foundations to the Sino-Japanese relationship, Chen said, adding that it will seriously hurt the feelings of the Chinese people if Lee was permitted to visit Japan.

He hoped that Japanese government will properly deal with this issue in line with the principles of the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement and the Sino-Japanese Joint Declaration, and stop doing such things harmful to bilateral ties.
