Sri Lanka to Offer Arms for Senior Customs Officers

Sri Lanka's Customs Department is making arrangements to issue pistols to all its Customs officers over the rank of assistant superintendent, the state-run Daily News said on Tuesday.

This follows the recent assassination of Customs investigation officer Sujith Prasanna Perera who had exposed several frauds of leading businessmen and drug peddlers.

Police investigations have revealed that the assassination was a contract killing executed by an underworld gang and that some Customs officers were themselves involved.

However, after the assassination, Customs officers made representations to the government seeking special protection for them for fear of their lives.

Accordingly it has been decided to issue them pistols and provide them training in the use of arms at a police training school.
