Cuban Communist Party Marks Founding Anniversary

Cuba on Monday commemorated the founding of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC), 40 years after the proclamation of the socialist character of the 1959 triumphant revolution.

According to the editorial of the official newspaper Granma, the PCC became what it is today actually on October 3, 1965, when it changed its name from the United Party of the Socialist Revolution of Cuba (PURSC), by grouping members of the popular sectors and internal organizations.

On that date, the party's Central Committee and the Political Bureau were also formed, while the newspapers Revolucion and Hoy became Granma, the official organ of the PCC.

Nevertheless, April 16, 1961, was the symbolic date for the creation of the PCC, considering that it was the moment when socialism came into existence in the island country.

The PCC is the leading force in the Cuban society. As President Fidel Castro has said, "the party is the soul of the revolution" and is the basis for unity and doctrine.
