Forum on Lancang-Mekong River Development to be Held in SW ChinaChina will hold a special forum on economic development and cooperation for the Lancang-Mekong River region during the 2001 Kunming Export Commodities Fair in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, June 6-10 this year.The Chinese government is taking active measures to develop the Lancang-Mekong River, a promising route for linking west China with southeast Asian countries. The Mekong River, dubbed "The Danube of the East", runs through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, for a total distance of 4,661 km. The 2,160 km upstream section in China is known as the Lancang River, which traverses southwest China's Yunnan Province for more than 1,000 kilometers. Officials and business people from the countries along the Lancang-Mekong River will attend the forum and an exhibition on the area's development during the fair. China has successfully hosted eight export fairs in Kunming since 1993. The fairs have featured export trade, new technology, overseas construction projects, and international investment. Commodities displayed at the fair include machinery, tobacco, chemicals, telecommunications, agriculture and electronic products.
