Car Manufacturers Vow to Protect Environment

More and more companies apply environmental friendly technology to the manufacturing of cars as the Chinese government is dedicated to environmental protection.

China has clearly stated in its Tenth Five-Year Plan that clean cars should enjoy a priority. This shows the government's strong determination to take up the challenges of a modern automotive industry and to reconcile the industry's development with environmental protection.

"Adopting the advanced engine technology and high quality fuel is an efficient way to harmonize the relations between human beings and the environment," said Dr. Andreas Bastian, a senior manager of Volkswagen's Research and Development Department.

Bastian is one of more than 200 representatives from a dozen countries who are participating in an international symposium on Environmental Protection Technology of Cars held Monday.

He called on China's petroleum industry to provide good quality fuel for engines.

"We intend to introduce all the innovation technology to China and help promote its environmental friendly protection activities. We hope it will reduce pollution in the near future," said Michel Bricout, director of Citroen's international department.

Citroen's joint venture in China, which produces the well- received Fukang brand cars in the Chinese market, has adopted some measures to satisfy the market.

As more Chinese prefer to own their own cars, the private car market is soaring. Experts estimate that from now till 2005, China will see an additional one million cars on an annual basis. The government has paid more attention to protecting the environment while developing the car market.
