Senior Legislator on Economic Development in Western Areas

Tian Jiyun, a vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, has asked officials and people in western China to continue to promote economic development.

He made the call during a nine-day inspection tour of Yunnan Province in southwest China, April 7-15, where he visited the provincial capital Kunming, Lijiang Prefecture and Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture.

Tian held a number of discussions during the tour with local officials, urging them to "seize opportunities to step up development."

The country's development strategy on the vast western area provides opportunities for the area's fast development, Tian said.

Enterprises in western China should develop more famous brand name products and related industrialization projects, he said. At the same time, local governments should make greater efforts to improve the investing environment to attract more overseas investment as well as high-tech development, management experience and professionals.

With China expected to enter the World Trade Organization (WTO), the country should pay more attention to introduce advanced technology from overseas to upgrade its industrial products, Tian said.

He also urged local officials to promote tourism industry in the province.

With rich tourist resources, tourism has a big potential market and will become the province's pillar industry, Tian added.
