Tibetan Official Meets US Diplomat

At present, Tibet enjoys political stability and its people live and work in harmony and contentment. And "Tibet is at its best in history," said a leading official of Tibet Autonomous Region.

Legqog, chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region, made the remarks Monday at a meeting with David Bleyle, U.S. Consul General in Chengdu in southwest China. The two sides expressed the wish to strengthen environmental cooperation.

China's strategy of developing its vast west provides opportunities for the development of Tibet, Legqog said, adding that the region will beef up construction of transportation, energy and telecommunication projects while making greater efforts to protect the environment in the years to come.

He said the regional government attaches great importance to environmental protection and people's awareness of environment has also improved quite a lot.

Tibet will not follow the way of "first polluting then addressing pollution problems," the official told Bleyle, who is on a study tour on environment in Tibet.

Over the past decades, Legqog said, Tibet has made great achievements with care from the central government and assistance from other parts of China.
