Seoul Blames Kamei for Irresponsible Remarks

South Korea Monday blamed Shizuka Kamei, chairman of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party's Policy Research Council, for proposing that Japan send "self-defense" units to South Korea.

Kamei, who is running for the LDP presidency and consequently the post of prime minister under the present LDP-dominated coalition, has recently said Japan should exercise its "collective self-defense rights" and send units to the Korean Peninsula if the United States Forces Korea (USFK) meets military provocation.

In a statement, the South Korean Foreign Ministry denounced Kamei, saying his remarks "ignored our sovereignty and disregarded all other interested nations except Japan."

It urges Kamei to exercise more discretion when talking about topics related to South Korean sovereignty.

"We reconfirm our basic stance about the defense and security of Japan. Discussions on these topics should be carried out transparently, in a direction that will not harm peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region," said the ministry in the statement.
