Blast Rips through London Postal Sorting Office

An explosion ripped through a postal sorting office in Hendon, northwest London, fire services said here early on Sunday.

The blast, shortly before 11:30 pm (2230 GMT) Saturday, blew out windows and eye witnesses said they saw smoke coming from inside the building.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said it did not receive a coded warning before the explosion and that there were no reports of injury.

No one was due to be working in the building at the time, a postal service spokesman said.

Explosives officers were at the scene, a police spokesman said.

Police were cordoning off the area and evacuating night workers from nearby buildings, he added.

The spokesman for the postal service added that the building was a small delivery office which deals with mail for the local postal area. It was one of 100 similarly-sized buildings in the capital.

Police and three fire engines arrived at the scene of the explosion, a spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said.
