Building Evacuated for Remembering Students' MovementSeveral government departments are being removed from the "Red Mansion" in downtown Beijing, where university students started demonstrations, part of the well- known "May 4" patriotic movement in 1919.The departments were settled in the red building in the 1950s and great efforts have been made to avoid damaging or changing the building's exterior and interior, including a ban on installing air conditioners in the office. On April 2, the State Administration of Relics left the building and other units still inside the building will eventually follow suit to make room for the possible opening of a memorial hall for the students movement. On May 4, 1919, more than 3,000 students from a dozen local universities including Peking University marched from the Democratic Square behind the "Red Mansion" to the Tian'anmen Square to protest the then government's failure to safeguard national interests. |
