Yugoslav Ruling Party Not to Intervene in Montenegro's ElectionYugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica and Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic said Friday that the ruling Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS) will not intervene in the key parliamentary election in Montenegro this month.They issued a joint statement to affirm that DOS and the Yugoslav army do not have any plan to overthrow the Montenegrin government if DOS loses in the April 22 election as Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic alleged. Djukanovic has pledged to organize a referendum calling for independence from Yugoslavia if he wins. The statement indicated that the Yugoslav government will not use army to exert pressure on voters. DOS reiterated that they will peacefully accept any result of the vote and that Montenegrins enjoy rights to decide whether to remain in the federation or declare independence. The statement also said if Montenegro chooses to stay in the federation with Serbia, DOS will be satisfied and will be glad to rebuild the bilateral relations between them. |
