Jail Inmates Riot in Central Brazil

The riot in a Brazilian prison entered its second day Friday with some 170 people still held hostage, Police said.

About 350 jail inmates joined the rebellion that happened on Thursday afternoon in Mato Grosso state of central Brazil. They took some 170 people hostage, including 107 women, 52 children, seven men, and four jail penitentiary agents. No death or injuries were reported.

The inmates demanded that the director of the penitentiary center, Elpidio Onofre, study their sentences and improve sanitary and feeding conditions.

The Mato Grosso's jail, which was originally planed to hold 260 inmates, now has 368 prisoners.
