Never Forget Handicapped People: Li Ruihuan

A senior Chinese leader has urged authorities at all levels to never forget about handicapped people, the most vulnerable group in society.

Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made this statement while meeting with delegates attending the second national work conference on the issue of handicapped persons which opened here Friday.

In his speech, the CPPCC leader hailed the remarkable achievements in China's efforts to assist disabled people during the ninth five-year plan period (1996-2000). But he reminded the delegates of the problems and difficulties involved in the issue.

Present at the meeting were Wang Guangying, a vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress; Ismail Amat, a state councilor and chairman of the State Council Committee on the Work of Disabled Persons; Ngapoi Ngawang Jigme, a CPPCC vice chairman; and Yu Yongbo, a member of the Central Military Commission.

At the opening of the conference, Ismail Amat also made a speech recalling how the Party and government care for handicapped people and a series of favorable policies adopted to boost the development of this group.
