Pharmaceutical Giant AstraZeneca Signs Co-op Pact with Chinese University

AstraZeneca, one of the World's leading pharmaceutical companies, has signed an agreement with the Shanghai Jiaotong University to work together in the research of neuropsychiatric genetics.

By the agreement signed Tuesday, AstraZeneca will provide several million US dollars over the next three years to a research team headed by professor He Lin, for research into the genetic mechanism of schizophrenia and its pharmaceutical applications.

He, deputy head of the university's Bio-X Life Sciences Center, is the winner of an award for "outstanding researcher" of the year by NARSAD - the world's largest non-government institute on brain research based in the United States.

According to statistics by the World Health Organization (WHO), about 400 million people worldwide suffer from various mental diseases.

In China, experts said mental diseases have become the top health risk over recent years due to drastic social changes and will remain so over the next two decades.
