Publisher, Writers Win Compensation from Pirates

The People's Literature Publishing House and 14 Chinese writers including Ba Jin, the well- known author of the trilogy -- "Family," "Spring" and "Autumn," has won over 1 million yuan in compensation from pirates.

The China Social Publishing House and the Shunyi Fugezhuang Welfare Printing Mill were sued for publishing 14 works without approval from these 14 authors and the People's Literature Publishing House. The latter has obtained the monopoly to publish the works during the period of 1992-2000.

The dispute was finally settled through a mediation in Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court, when the two sides agreed on the sum of compensation.

According to the agreement, the two offenders will stop the pirating immediately, make open apologies to the victims, and pay 450,000 yuan to the People's Literature Publishing House and 560,000 yuan to the writers.
