Russian President Appoints New Baltic Fleet CommanderRussian President Vladimir Putin Thursday appointed Vice-Admiral Vladimir Valuyev as the national navy's Baltic Fleet commander, the Kremlin press service announced.Valuyev has been acting commander of the Baltic fleet since December 2000 when its then commander Admiral Vladimir Yegorov was elected governor of Russia's Kaliningrad region. Valuyev, 53, finished a high naval school in 1969. He graduated from the naval academy in 1983 and the military academy of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff in 1993. He served at nuclear submarines of the Northern and Pacific fleets and was promoted to the post of a squadron commander. Valuyev was deputy chief of the Russian Main Naval Headquarters. In 1996, he was appointed first deputy commander of the Baltic fleet. He is married with two daughters. |
