Moldovan President to Pay First Visit to Russia

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin will pay an official visit to Moscow on April 16-17, the Kremlin press service said Thursday.

This will be Voronin's first foreign visit as head of state.

During the coming trip, President Voronin will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin over bilateral ties and cooperation in the Kremlin on April 16, the press service said.

"The main accent is to be put on economic cooperation and the settlement of the Transdnestr (region) problem," it said.

Voronin earlier said, speaking about his country's foreign- policy priorities, that Russia is Moldova's "strategic partner." He also said that he will take resolute measures to settle the Transdnestr problem, which has set back the development of bilateral relations.

Voronin, 60, was elected president on April 4 by parliament, defeating his main rival, incumbent Prime Minister Dumitru Braghis. His Party of Communists won a landslide victory in February 25 general elections.
