Asian International River Research Center Set Up

The Asian International River Research Center was founded at Yunnan University recently.

The research center will seek ways to best use international river resources in certain countries and study the methods of biodiversity protection, cross-border water pollution treatment and wetland preservation.

Asia has 40 international rivers, and their area makes up 60 percent of Asia's total land area.

The subject of international rivers has become an important feature of regional economic cooperation. However, systematic study of this issue is still in the early stage and needs fine- tuning, said He Daming, director of the research center.

The U.N. Development Program is pushing ahead with the US$30 billion regional cooperation project at Tumenjiang which involves China, the DPRK, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, Russia and Japan.

The Lancang-Mekong River, which runs through China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Viet Nam, is another regional cooperation project which will cost US$40 billion.
