China's 2nd Biggest Hydropower Plant Finds Builders

Two Chinese companies have won the bid to build civil engineering works for the Longtan Hydropower Station on the Hongshui River that flows through most areas of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The two companies -- Gezhouba Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Group Company and the associated body of Jiangnan Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Bureau and Guangxi Hydropower Engineering Bureau -- were chosen from a public bidding between 10 competitors from at home and abroad, said sources from Guangxi Longtan Hydropower Development Co., Ltd., the developer.

With investment of 24.7 billion yuan (about 2.98 billion US dollars), Longtan hydropower station is designed to have an installed capacity of 4.2 million kw in the near term and 5.4 million kw in the long term. It will be the second largest hydropower station after the Three Gorges Hydropower Project.

Work on civil engineering for Longtan Hydropower Project will start on July 1 and will be finished in 27 months. The first generator is expected to be operational by June 2007, and the entire project will be completed in 2009.

It will be able to generate 15.67 billion kw/h of electricity annually.
