Deepwater Port Construction to be Kicked off at Yangshan

Formally approved by the State Council and the State Planning Commission, the 1st-phase construction of the Yangshan deepwater port project of Shanghai International Shipping Center is going to start construction as scheduled in the near future.

The first stage of the Yangshan project includes the building of the 32.2-km long Luchao-Yangshan Bridge, the transformer station and water-conducting pipelines. It is to link up the Luchao Harbor (Luchaogang) in Shanghai, Dayangshan and Xiaoyangshan Islands at Zhoushan archipelago for the putting-up of five deepwater berths for the fifth and sixth generation container ships as well as the auxiliary facilities for rear services.

The total cost of the 1st-phase construction is estimated at RMB12bn yuan, of which port project accounts for RMB 5.97bn, Luchao-Yangshan Bridge RMB 4.95bn, and supportive infrastructure 1.8bn yuan.

Yangshan deepwater port, one of the eight large ports in Zhoushan Harbor, is some 27.5km away from Luchao Harbor in Shanghai. With a water surface of some 30 sq km, the port has more than 90 islands and reefs, and it has a 13-km long deepwater coastline. It is also a natural shelter for the typhoon and an operating time as long as some 315 days. After the extensive research and analysis, Yangshan deepwater port is thought fit for building 50 deepwater berths of a depth of 15-meters and a designed annual capacity of 15mn TEUs.
