Shanghai Preparing for Upcoming APEC Meeting

Preparations for the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) informal leadership meeting and other APEC-related events, scheduled for October in Shanghai, are in full swing.

An official with the Shanghai municipal government said that local workers and technicians are busy establishing a special telecommunications network for the meeting.

The network, to be based on satellite earth stations, mobile telecommunications vehicles and some other high-tech facilities, is aimed to provide all participants with first-rate multimedia services.

A massive facelift campaign was launched beginning April 1 to clean roads and rivers in the city while whitewashing 4.8 million square meters of buildings and renovating 610,000 square meters of roofs.

Four major taxi companies, including Qiangsheng and Dazhong, which have been assigned to provide services for the meeting, are also busy making preparations.

According to the organizing committee, hundreds of business leaders from across the world are expected to attend the summit, which will carry the theme "New Century, New Economy: Development In A Globalizing World."
